Four Centuries of Innovation: From Massachusetts to the World

Ten years ago, Janey Bishoff led and managed a project with Dr. Robert Krim to help the Massachusetts Port Authority brand Massachusetts’ incredible 400-year history of world-changing innovations in a new building at Logan International Airport. Bishoff and Krim worked with Massport executives and their architects, AECOM, to understand the design they were developing for a new Connector between Terminals C and E. As designs were considered, our team honed in on the idea of a wall-mounted installation that would showcase 50 of the most significant innovations born in Massachusetts.

Bishoff and Krim had access to a plethora of historical information about the hundreds of Massachusetts-born innovations from research gathered by the Boston History and Innovation Collaborative (a non-profit organization Bishoff helped Krim start). Thus, identifying potential content was the easy part.  But selecting only 50 innovations to display was only the first challenge Bishoff and Krim faced. Distilling and communicating the essence of each innovation in just a few easily understood phrases and sentences and giving each a name was the next.  A supremely talented Massport employee sought out, curated, and created the visuals.

Over months of work by our team the installation began to take shape, but it needed a name. “Four centuries of innovation” was factual enough, but didn’t distinguish these from other innovations throughout the world, so Bishoff paired it with: From Massachusetts to the World.

Nearly twenty months later the installation was celebrated with a ribbon cutting. Three large screens flash an image for each innovation on a continuous loop. The names of each of the innovations are also inscribed on the walls throughout the Terminal Connector.
